FLOODING KILLS TWO, DESTROYS SEVEN MORE SETTLEMENTS IN NASARAWA

Flooding along the River Benue has claimed two lives and destroyed seven additional village settlements in the Ekye area of Doma Local Government Area of Nasarawa State, worsening the situation in the affected communities.

The State Commissioner for Information, Culture and Tourism, Dr Nawani Aboki, disclosed this during a press briefing on the current situation, attributing the flooding to the overflow of the River Benue.

The flooding comes amid reports that more than 5,000 residents had already been displaced in parts of the state.

Aboki said the State Emergency Management Agency had been directed to commence the distribution of relief materials to provide assistance to residents affected by the disaster.

He added that displaced persons had moved to higher ground in nearby communities, including Rukubi, Angbashim and Apanaja, to escape the rising floodwaters.

The commissioner said efforts were being intensified to evacuate residents living along the river to safer locations to prevent further loss of lives and destruction of property.
