A ghastly road accident involving a Volvo jeep and a motorcycle has claimed the life of a young man near New Town, very close to the Ekiti State Abattoir along Iworoko Road.
The victim was identified as AY, who works as a ticket agent for trailer operators transporting yam from Aba Ilokun to Lagos and other parts of the country.
According to eyewitnesses, two persons were on the motorcycle coming from University Road but in an attempt to cross the road to distribute local government tickets to trailers loaded with yam, an oncoming jeep struck the motorcycle.
The witness explained that AY died on the spot, while the female passenger at the back of the motorcycle sustained a high degree of injury.

Speaking on the incident, the Chairman of Progress Yam Market, Mallam Abdullazis Momoh, and the Chairman of the Yam Market Committee, Mallam Ismaila Nasiru, called for the immediate construction of speed breakers near the market.
They recalled that this is the second road accident to occur in the area this year as little boy was hit by a mini bus earlier in the year while crossing the road, but survived after treatment.
As at the time of filing this report, the lifeless body of the victim had not been evacuated as the injured passenger has been taken to an undisclosed hospital for treatment meanwhile, the driver of the jeep was detained by villagers around the community.

The accident has once again raised concerns about road safety, traffic control, and the need for urgent intervention around the abattoir and yam market axis.
