13th African Games set to begin in Ghana

Africa’s biggest sporting event, the African Games is set to begin on Friday, March 8, 2024 in Ghana.

The competition, formerly known as Pan-African games and later All African Games, was initially scheduled for 2023, but had to be shifted due to inability of host, Ghana to meet up with infrastructure requirement.

It is the first time Ghana will be hosting the competition and the games have been decentralized such that there are venues in the capital Accra as well as two other cities, Kumasi and Cape Coast.

54 African countries are expected to take part while 24 competitive sports are available with 7 demonstration sports.

For Nigeria, the African Games, which began in 1965 has become a favorite hunting ground as Team Nigeria always emerged as one of the top teams.

Nigeria also hosted the games in Lagos in 1973 and in Abuja in 2003.

For this edition, Team Nigeria will feature in almost all the available sports, with its camping venues in Lagos, Abuja, Ibadan, Yenagoa and Gombe.

Some of the sports in which Nigeria will take part are Athletics, Badminton, Basketball, Football, Hockey, Rugby, Swimming, Taekwondo, Tennis, Weightlifting, Volleyball, Cricket, Handball, Table-Tennis, Scrabble, Judo, Karate, Wrestling, Cycling, among others.
