Kwara Govt Seals Off Illegal Mortuary

An illegally operated mortuary has been sealed off by the Kwara State Government.

The mortuary, owned by a popular hospital, is located at Gaa Akanbi Area of Ilorin South Local Government Area of the State.

Following a tip off by concerned residents on the activities at the facility, a team from the State Ministry of Health led by the Commissioner, Dr Amina El-Imam, and accompanied by some officers of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps paid an unscheduled visit to the building along Gaa Akanbi area.

The Commissioner for Health, Dr. Amina Ahmed El-Imam noted that the facility, often referred to as ‘Omosebi’, is unknown to the Ministry of Health as a registered mortuary service provider.

Dr. El-Imam who noted that it is important to preserve the dignity of the dead, affirmed that the facility did not meet the required standard and therefore threatened the well-being of residents.

Also, the Director, Medical Services and Training in the Ministry, Dr. Musiliu Odunaiya said the morgue handlers have been directed to report to the State Ministry of Health for further briefing.

Dr Odunaiya also advised members of the public to take the remains of their loved ones to Government owned facilities for safe custody.
