Don Advocates Reintroduction of Regional Government in Nigeria

By Oluwaseyi Akanbi

The Federal Government has been advised to find solutions to the root cause of the various agitations for secession in country.

A cleric, Professor Rotimi Sanya of the Bride Assembly, Ado Ekiti made the call in an interview with Progress FM Reporter.

He noted that there have been no calls for division of Nigeria in recent years making the current agitations by some individuals a source of worry.

According to Professor Sanya “what we are witnessing in Nigeria today is worrisome, people no longer believe in one Nigeria, some sections are feeling cheated and marginalized. They are not happy because they feel our common resources are not shared equally”.

“This is what government should address. They must ask and know why some people want to secede. Arresting the frontiers of that agitation won’t solve this deteriorating condition of Nigeria but rather worsen it”.

The Don explained that government should be ready to dialogue with every section of the country and address all issues that had made Nigerians lose hope in the nation’s unity.

Professor Sanya advocated reintroduction of regional government as was in place in the past, this he said would aid the growth of state and central governments.

“Believe me, if regional government is reintroduced, where we have less concentration of power at the centre and bulk of autonomy given to the region, it would spur rapid development just as we had it in the past. This is achievable if our leaders show the political will” Professor Sanya said.
