CBN Warns Nigerians on Fake Currency in Circulation

The Central Bank of Nigeria CBN, has alerted the public on the alleged circulation of counterfeit naira notes in the country.

In a statement by the bank, it advises all stakeholders including Deposit Money Banks, Bureau de Change and the public to be vigilant as it is working with law enforcement agencies to arrest those responsible.

The CBN reminded Nigerians that it is a punishable offence under the law, to produce and circulate, fake currency notes or coins, issued by the Bank.

The Apex Bank enjoined members of the public to report anyone suspected of possessing counterfeit naira notes, to the nearest police station or CBN office.

For some weeks now, there have been scarcity of Naira notes in Circulation while the Supreme Court recently ruled that both the old and new Naira denominations should continue to be legal tender indefinitely.
