World Cup qualifier: Nigeria, South Africa, settle for 1-1 draw

The Super Eagles of Nigeria played out a 1-1 draw against the Bafana Bafana of South Africa in a 2026 FIFA World Cup, Africa Group C qualifying match which took place at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, Uyo on Friday, 7th June, 2024.

South Africa took the lead in the 29th minute through Themba Zwane who dazzled past the Nigerian defence to send the ball beyond the reach of Stanley Nwabali in goal for the Super Eagles.

In the 46th minute, Fisayo Dele-Bashiru got Nigeria back into the game with an exquisite solo effort from outside the box.

Series of chances then fell to the Super Eagles to snatch a win but the crossbar and the impressive Ronwen Williams in goal for South Africa denied Nigeria a needed win.

The Super Eagles, as a result of the draw, remain winless in three games of their qualifying campaign, and sit in fifth position out of six teams, as their quest to make it to the 2026 World Cup hang in the balance.

Only the eventual group winner will qualify directly for the World Cup.

In some other results, Zimbabwe lost 0-2 at home to Lesotho, Cote D’Ivoire beat Gabon by a lone goal, Morocco defeated Zambia by 2-1 while Uganda prevailed 1-0 over Botswana.

Meanwhile, the World Cup qualifiers continue with MatchDay 4 set to hold between Sunday June 9 and Tuesday, June 11.

Nigeria will travel to Cote D’Ivoire on Monday, June 10 to face Benin Republic; South Africa will host Zimbabwe while Lesotho will entertain Rwanda.
