The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr Femi Gbajabiamila has urged the Federal government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities ASUU to shift grounds towards resolving the lingering strike for the interest of students and the nation’s tertiary institutions.
The speaker gave the advice during a meeting with ASUU and the Federal government’s delegation at the National Assembly Complex in Abuja.
Mr Gbajabiamila, who decried the negative impact of the strike on students and the nation’s education system maintained that all parties concerned must yield to workable solution for students to go back to school.
According to him, there must be a permanent resolution to forestall recurrence of the issues that led to the industrial action.
The minister of State for Education, Mr Goodluck Opiah said the strike has been of great concern to stakeholders in the education sector.
He pointed out that the federal government was in consultations with a view of finding lasting solutions to the issue.
The President of ASUU Professor Emmanuel Osodeke, who explained that the Minister of Education had not convened a formal meeting with the union on the issue except the ministry of Labour, stressed that strike is a symptom to the challenges in the system.
He added that if all stakeholders joined hands to resolve the issue, public universities could be like public primary and secondary schools which do not experience strike action.
