Stakeholders Identify FOI Act as Tool in Promoting Good Governance

The National Orientation Agency, Ekiti State Directorate has identified the Freedom of Information Act as a veritable tool in promoting transparency, accountability and good governance.

This was the submission of stakeholders at a roundtable discussion program organized by the National Orientation Agency, NOA Ekiti State and held at the NUJ Press Center Oke Bareke Ado Ekiti.

While delivering his opening speech at the programme which also had NUJ members from NOA and other chapels in attendance, the state director of agency, Mr.M.B Fadahunsi noted that information was power and for public good,hence it must be dished out for the benefit of the society.

The Desk Officer of FOI in NOA,Mr Gbenga Akinyemi,said that the FOI Act should supercede the oath of secrecy whenever public interest was concerned.

In a remark, the representative of Chairman, NUJ Ekiti State, Rotimi Ojomoyela, Mr. Victor Ogunje who is the Chairman of the correspondent Chapel noted that full application of FOI act was long overdue saying it was a tool to promote transparency, accountability and good governance in the country.

The Speaker of the day who is also the Deputy Director Programs NOA Ekiti State, Mr.Akin Adeyemi, expressed displeasure about the poor handling of the Freedom of Information Act in the country and called for political will in order to make it more effective.
