President of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Mr Joe Ajaero has presented the body’s letter of demands to the National Assembly.
Ajaero handed over the letter to the Chairman, Senate Committee on Labour, Employment and Productivity, Senator Diket Plang.
The demands included, full implementation of welfare provisions, employment generation, subsidy to farmers and fixing the four refineries, among others.
Speaking at the National Assembly, Mr Ajaero said Nigerians embarked on peaceful protests due to the hunger in the land, saying the protests would serve as signal to Federal Government to immediately tackle the challenges facing the country.
He also noted that negotiation on the new National Minimum Wage had commenced but the amount was yet to be decided.
Receiving the letter, Senator Plang assured the NLC that their demands would be looked into and discussed soonest.
The Nigeria Labour Congress and other related Unions commenced Nationwide protests on Tuesday 27th February, 2024, over high cost of living, inflation, insecurity and hardship in the country.
Protesters across several states were seen carrying placards with different inscriptions such as, End Poverty and Hunger; Support Local Industries; Fix local Refineries; End Naira devaluation; Tax the rich, subsidize the poor, among others.
In Ekiti State, the Nigeria Labour Congress NLC also joined others nationwide to protest the current economy hardship in the country.
Members of the union who converged on Fajuyi Park, Ado Ekiti to express their displeasure over the high cost of food and other commodities displayed placards with various inscriptions such as Ebi Npa wa, (We are hungry); Remove tax on drugs; We say no to slavery; End insecurity; Address high cost food, among others.
Speaking with newsmen, the Chairman of NLC in Ekiti State, Comrade Kolapo Olatunde said the peaceful protest became necessary to send signal to governments at all levels that people could no longer endure the current harsh Economic situation.
He called on President Bola Tinubu to find lasting solution to the ugly development in the Interest of average Nigerians.
