A professor of international law and jurispudence Akin Oyebode wants the Federal Government to implement the over 600 recommendations of the 2014 national confab to address nigeria’s challenges, societal imbalances and bad governance in the country
He made the call at a one day public consultation on the propose reveiw of the 1999 constitution of the federal Republic of Nigeria as amended.
Professor Oyebode who is the Chairman of the public consultation was emphatic that what nigeria needed was a new written constitution rather than the current one forged by the military government on Nigeria.
The former Vice Chancellor of the University of Ado Ekiti faulted the ongoing constitution review process describing it as a mere jamboree which could not provide a document that would address the challenges facing Nigeria.
Also the Secretary General of Yoruba Council of Elders, Dr Kunle Olajide told the gathering that the current constitution was faulty and could not be amended nor reviewed saying it has done more bad than good to the country.
Other stakeholders including Bishop, Catholic Diocese of Ekiti, Most Reverend Felix Ajakaye, and Professor Kunle Ajayi, agitated for a constitution that would reflect the wishes and aspirations,interest, views and values of Nigerians.
In a presentation Governor kayode fayemi noted that the Present constitution attracted much criticism from Nigerians because it was a product of military decrees which was allien to democratic process.
He advocated for devolution of power and allocation of more resources to the federating units of the country.
There were presentation from the representatives of the three arms of government and civil society’s organisation on the need for a new instrument to guide Nigeria to make progress in all aspects.
