Former Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria, Mr Godwin Emefiele has remained in Kuje prison, Abuja despite securing bail seven days before his trial over fraud and corruption began.
According to his lawyer, Mathew Burkaa, the former CBN boss had not been able to fulfill the conditions attached to his bail.
Recall that on the 22nd of November, 2023, Justice Hamza Muazu of the Federal High Court, Abuja granted bail to Mr Emefiele in the sum of Three Hundred Million Naira (#300m)
Justice Muazu also ordered that the former Apex bank Chief must produce two sureties who have landed property in the Maitama District, Federal Capital Territory.
The judge added that Mr Emefiele must remain in prison custody until he fulfill all the conditions.
When Emefiele’s trial began on Tuesday, the 28th of November, 2023 at the Federal High Court, Abuja, he was brought to Court by a Prison van while his lawyer, Mathew Burkaa admitted to reporters that his client was still in prison but efforts were being intensified to meet the bail terms.
The case was later adjourned till the 18th of January, 2024 while Emefiele was taken back to prison.
He is expected to be released as soon as he met the bail conditions such that he would be attending court proceedings from home.
