FARMERS PROFER SOLUTIONS TO HIGH COST OF FOOD IN NIGERIA

Some farmers in Ekiti State have called for adequate provisions to ensure that President Bola Tinubu’s commitment on food supply comes into reality.

One of the farmers, Mr. Sunday Adesanya while speaking with Radio Nigeria reporter said the President’s vision would be achieved, if herders were not allowed to graze their animals on people’s farms.

Mr. Adesanya also noted that finance, bush burning and lack of storage facilities remained some of the impediments to achieving food sufficiency in the State.

Another farmer, Mr. Olawale Olajubaje said the two hectares of cassava he planted in the last two years in Orin-Ekiti farm settlement got wasted because of bad road, hence the need for constant grading of rural roads for easy transportation of farmers produce to avoid spoilage.

Mr. Olajubaje also called for proper measure to guide against fake agro-chemicals, provision of farm implement to encourage mechanization as well as availability of irrigation facilities to ensure all-year-round farming.

The two farmers however emphasized that if both Federal and State Governments prioritized needs of farmers, it would reduce hunger, create employment as well increase the country’s internally generated revenue.

They also maintained that the measure would help in the proper running of the State’s Cargo Airport and assist off-takers in their enterprise.

It would be recalled that President Bola Tinubu during the new year broadcast had restated his commitment to ensure constant food supply and affordability by cultivating 500,000 hectares of farmlands across the country to grow maize, rice, wheat, millet and other staple crops.
