Only Pres Tinubu can decide border re-opening

The Comptroller General of Nigeria Custom Service, Mr Bashir Adeniyi has said only President Bola Tinubu coud decide on border re-opening in the country.

Mr Adeniyi, who was reacting to agitation for the re-opening of borders, stated this during an interactive session with residents of Kongolam border town in Katsina State.

He gave an assurance that a decision on the issue would be taken once the on-going consultations were concluded.

The Comptroller-General of the NCS said measures have been taken to reduce number of check-points along border posts and promote synergy between Service personnel and traders.

Mr Adeniyi said all complaints and concerns by residents of border communities were communicated to the President who in turn directed that all confiscated food items should be released on the condition that they would be sold in Nigerian markets.

He gave an insight into the fact that the NCS is collaborating with other security agencies to address obstacles against free trade in border areas, to ensure economic prosperity.

The NCS DG also said the service would continue to monitor and ensure that food produced in Nigeria remains in the country and are consumed by Nigerians, with a call on citizens to work together with relevant agencies to prevent exportation of food items, at this critical time.
