NLC, TUC Suspend Planned Strike For 30 Days as N35,000 Pay Rise Begins September

Organised labour unions have suspended their planned nationwide indefinite strike for the next one month.

This was contained in a memorandum of understanding signed on Monday by the NLC President, Joe Ajaero, and General Secretary, Emmanuel Ugboaja; TUC President, Festus Osifo, and Secretary General, Nuhu Toro; Minister of Labour and Employment, Simon Lalong; Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Dr Nkeiruka Onyejeocha; and Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris.

“The NLC and TUC accept to suspend for 30 days the planned Indefinite Nationwide strike scheduled to begin on Tuesday October 3, 2023.

“The Federal Government grants a wage award of N35,000 only to all Federal Government workers beginning from the month of
September pending when a new national minimum wage is expected to have
been signed into law.”

The decisions come at the end of long hours meeting between the Federal Government, NLC, and the TUC on Monday.

Minister of Labour and Employment, Simon Lalong said the Memorandum shall be filed with the relevant Court of competent jurisdiction within one week as consent judgment by the Federal Government.

However, the NLC President, Joe Ajaero, said the unions would revisit the agreement if the FG fails to fulfil its demands.
