Two persons have been allegedly shot dead by an officer of the Nigeria Police during a crisis at the Omisanjana area of Ado Ekiti.
According to some witnesses who pleaded anonymity, the problem started yesterday night when a Lexus Car hit a motorcycle and the driver ran away after discovering that the rider and the passenger of bike were badly injured.
The witnesses said residents invited the police to the matter and took the injured people to hospital, while men of the Rapid Response Squad, RRS, who later join the officers on ground started shooting on arrival and killed two people in the process.
In a statement, the Police Public Relations Officer, Ekiti State Command, Mr. Sunday Abutu explained that, upon receipt of the information, men of the State Traffic Section were deployed to the Scene of the accident to forestall breakdown of law and order.
Mr. Abutu noted that, on getting to the scene, the operatives met a resistance as some irate youths did not allow them to perform their lawful duty and this necessitated a call for re-enforcement to assist the officers on ground, as one of the officers accidentally fired a shot that fatally injured two persons.
According to the Command’s Spokesperson, the officer responsible for the shotting has been disarmed, arrested and detained and shall be made to face disciplinary action, while the Command is already in touch with the two families of the deceased.
