NBA insists on financial autonomy for judiciary.

Members of the Nigeria Bar Association in Ekiti state have called on Governor Kayode Fayemi to accede to the demands of the judicial workers over the implementation of financial autonomy for the judicial sector.

Chairmen of the three branches of the association in Ado, Ikere and Ikole Ekiti made the call during a courtesy visit to Governor Kayode Fayemi in his office in Ado Ekiti.

Speaking with newsmen after the meeting, NBA chairman, Ado Ekiti brach, Mr Adeyemi Adewumi, that of Ikole branch, Mr Albert Adeyemi including the association’s Chairman from Ikere, Mrs Kikelomo Owolabi explained that the request of the judicial workers for financial autonomy was a constitutional provision which could not be negotiated.

They affirmed that granting financial autonomy to the judiciary would enable the court to function effectively urging government to accede to their request so as to suspend the ongoing nationwide strike.

Speaking during the meeting, Governor Kayode Fayemi who was represented by his deputy, Chief Bisi Egbeyemi appreciated the concern of the lawyers and promised to brief Governor Fayemi on the matter for necessary action.

The Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria, JUSUN had on April six declared a nationwide strike over the failure of state governments to grant financial autonomy to the judiciary and this had grounded activities at various courts in the country.
