Corps members across the sixteen local government areas of Ekiti state on Saturday joined their colleagues in the country to hold the National Environmental Day organised by the National Youth Service Corps, NYSC.
The National Environmental Day is part of the initiatives of the NYSC to contribute to the growth of the community.
During the exercise in Ekiti state, the Corps members were seen clearing drainages and picking refuse on the road, among others to ensure a healthy environment.
The Ogoga of Ikere-Ekiti, Oba Adejimi Adu who was attracted by the exercise carried out by Corps members in the town commended NYSC for keeping the country united and contributing to development of rural communities in Nigeria.
“I want this scheme to continue because of its impact on the development of Nigeria, especially in the rural areas”.
Oba Adu appreciated the NYSC Director General, Brigadier General Shuaib Ibrahim for the different initiatives aimed at ensuring the growth of the society, among which is the Environmental Sanitation Programme.
The Monarch commended Corps members in Ikere-Ekiti for embarking on developmental projects such as the construction of speed breakers, construction and renovation of public toilets, health initiative programmes among others.
In her reaction, the Ekiti State Coordinator of NYSC, Mrs. Mary Chikezie said the scheme would continue to contribute its quota to the growth of the country.
Mrs. Chikezie appreciated the traditional ruler for supporting the scheme and the corps members in the town.
