INEC Emphasizes Media Role in Democracy as NUJ Pledges Support for Credible Polls in Ekiti

The Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) of Ekiti State, Dr. Bunmi Omoseyindemi, has underscored the importance of the media in ensuring the success of democracy, stating that without credible information, citizens cannot make informed decisions.

Omoseyindemi made this statement during a visit by the executive members of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Ekiti State Council, led by Chairman Comrade Kayode Babatuyi, to his office in Ado-Ekiti.

He commended the NUJ for promoting responsible journalism, political awareness, and civic engagement, noting that INEC counts on the media to uphold professionalism, accuracy, fairness, and balance in reporting electoral matters.

The REC assured the media of INEC’s commitment to transparency, timely dissemination of accurate information, and adherence to electoral regulations, while urging journalists to guard against misinformation and sensationalism.

In response, Comrade Babatuyi highlighted the symbiotic relationship between INEC and the media, pledging the NUJ’s support for a credible, fair, and acceptable poll in Ekiti State.

He commended INEC’s accreditation of journalists at the NUJ Press Centre in the previous elections and requested that the Commisision keeps it up, which according to him facilitates proper monitoring and verification of electoral activities.

The NUJ Chairman assured that the union would mobilize its members to positively project INEC’s activities and ensure that only accredited and responsible journalists cover elections in the state.
