Susan Aroso

The Ekiti State Ministry of Environment and other relevant agencies have been enjoined to take proactive steps to curb acts of indiscriminate dumping of refuse in waterways and canals in and around Ado Ekiti, state capital.

Radio Nigeria Progress FM Reporter who went round the streets of the state capital, noticed that it has become the norms for people to dump refuse anywhere, most especially waterways, since they believe erosion would carry away such wastes.

The practice is common in areas of the city where the population is dense, most especially Okesa, Oke -Ila, Atikankan, Ijigbo, Old Garage, Post Office, Odo-Ado , Idolofin, Dallimore, among others.

Radio Nigeria Reporter also observed that in areas like Old Garage, Ijigbo, Atikankan among others, market men and women display their wares near heaps of refuse without minding the odour and health implications.

Similarly, the big Refuse Bin in front of Post Office usually overflow with Refuse, with stench coming out from it, yet traders are usually seen couducting their business around the bin.

Apart from making the environment very unkempt, heaps of refuse tends to become breeding ground for diseases.

Every relevant agency in the state are enjoined to take action promptly to make the city clean and avoid diseases.
