Periodic self reading, reading from many sources, having proofreaders and adoption of appropriate quotation methods have been identified as some of the ways to avoid plagiarism in academic environments.
The Provost, Ekiti State College of Health Sciences and Technology Ijero-Ekiti, Dr. Cecilia Adebayo made this known while delivering a paper at a two day-training for the Academic staff of the College on Effective Research.
Dr. Adebayo who described plagiarism as a criminal issue said it should be discouraged among Academics because of its negative effect on the personality and institutions involved.
She stated that the management of the College would continue to discourage acts of plagiarism among the staff and Students to ensure a credible academic environment, part of which was the reason for the workshop.
In another paper presentation, the Chairman, Governing Board of the College of Health Sciences and Technology, Ijero-Ekiti, Professor Kehinde Oluwadiya enjoined Lecturers to always attend trainings that could boost their knowledge in the area of research.
Professor Oluwadiya also advised them to always consider ethical issues in research and improve their ability to get the required information.
In his lecture, a Chief Lecturer at the Federal Polytechnic Offa, Kwara state Dr. Kadiri Kamoru urged institutions to provide necessary incentives for researchers and stressed the need for researchers to access necessary facilities outside their domains to enhance research works in the Country.
Dr. Kamoru pointed out that lecturers should develop interest in research and publication of books, as it would enhance their capacity and project them to the outside world.
