AFAN BLAMES SCARCITY OF INDIGENOUS CROPS ON DEFORESTATION.

Stakeholders in the agriculture sector have been enjoined not to allow indigenious plants such as bitter-kola, African cherry, walnut and locust bean go into extinction.

Ekiti State chairman, All Farmers Association of Nigeria, AFAN, Mr. Adebola Alagbada gave the advice in an exclusive interview with Radio Nigeria in Ado-Ekiti on the sideline at which most of the indigenous plants were becoming scarce.

Mr. Alagbada said although bitter-kola, African cherry, walnut and locust bean could take longer years before fruition, stressing that the gains aftermath would bring everlasting relief.

While noting that deforestation had led to scarcity of the crops, the Ekiti State AFAN chairman urged farmers to plant them due to their medicinal and economic values.

Mr. Alagbada however emphasized that there had been improved varieties of the indigenous plants, hence the need for the ministry of agriculture to do the needful.
