The National Union of Road Transport Workers, NURTW has warned States and Local Governments against releasing motor Parks or any of its facilities for rallies, campaigns and other political activities.
President of the Union, Alhaji Tajudeen Baruwa gave the directive while speaking with News Men in Abuja.
The NURTW President also directed that on no account should any executive use the name of the Union to canvas support or campaign for any candidate.
He said the measure was to maintain peace and ensure safety of passages at the motor Parks.
Alhaji Tajudeen Baruwa stressed that the union was not against members joining any political party.
He said a team headed by himself had embarked on building the capacity and educating members on their critical roles towards national development.
Alhaji Baruwa said the union was working with relevant stakeholders, Security and Traffic Management Agencies for the safety of road users in the country.
According to the NURTW President, the union will not relent in contributing to the socio economic development despite the deplorable conditions of Nigerian roads and other challenges faced by commercial drivers across the country.
The Transport Union Leader stressed the need for commercial drivers to avoid overloading, over speeding, intake of alcoholic drinks and always keep to traffic rules and regulations
He however appealed to the federal government to come up with palliatives to cushion the effect of the high cost of motor parts and Vehicle maintenance being experienced by members of the Union.
