Nigerians have been reminded to pay passionate attention to their mental health and physical well being so as to enjoy every stages of their in life.
The Chief judge of Ekiti State, Hon Justice John Adeyeye stated this in Ado Ekiti at the commemoration of world mental health day organised by the State branch of International federation of Women lawyers and Hope initiative for mental wellness and anti drug society.
The Chief judge who was represented by Hon Justice Blessing Ajileye said more attention on mental wellness became necessary to ensure stability mind.
He therefore called on female Lawyers in the state to use the instrumentality of existing laws against people perpetrating anti social behaviours and also to assist those suffering from mental illness in the society.
In their seperate lectures on the occasion, Dr Adedotun Ajiboye clinical psychologist from the Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital said those affected by mental illness should not be stigmatised while Hon Justice Toyin Abodunde advised Nigerians to guide against what could affect their minds so that it would not have negative implications on the brain.
Dr Ajiboye specifically recommended regular exercise and balanced diet to reduce the tendencies of being depressed which could drain blood and cause hypertension.
“Doing things in excessive ways is dangerous which in many occasions leads to mental illness. Don’t allow yourself or anybody to go into depression, share problems with those you can trust, come to hospital for regular check ups, whatever happens to you does not matter but the way you handle them” he added.
On her part, Hon Justice Abodunde urged the people to learn how to control their emotions regardless of their religious affliliations.
Earlier in her remark, the State Chairperson, international federation of Women lawyers, Mrs Oyinade Olatunbosun noted that, the reason a lot of people committed succide was because of frustrations which were not properly managed.
“Sometimes what we need is right environment and the right set of people not drugs to enhance wellness so that we can live the life we desire to live.” Olatunbosun said.
In another message, the President of Customary Court of the state judiciary, Mr. Kola Orejimi who was represented by Mr. Kayode Kolawole advocated the need for the society to treat mental health illness as enssetial part of primary health care saying that major causes of the challenge can not be far fetched from drug addiction and bad associations.
Good will messages from Market women, Association of Law Student, Chairman of Counselling Association of Nigeria represented by Pastor Victor Adelusi among others called on all relevant authorities to adequately give attention to mental health so that desired development could be achieved in every area of the society.
