There is the need for adequate synergy between members of the public and security agencies to ensure a peaceful society.
The Commissioner of Police in Ekiti State, Mr. Tunde Mobayo stated this during a lecture organized by the Institute For Peace and Conflict Resolution, Ministry of Foreign Affairs to commemorate the 2021 International Day of Peace held in Ikere-Ekiti.
The Commissioner of Police who spoke through the Divisional Police Officer, Ikere Division, Mr. Adekunle Obabusayo said if there was no synergy between residents and security personnel, there would be no peaceful co existence.
Mr. Mobayo explained that people needed to cultivate the habit of protecting public infrastructure in their domains and always volunteer relevant information that could lead to the arrest of criminals.
In another lecture, the Coordinator of the National Youths Service Corps, NYSC in Ekiti state, Mrs. Mary Chikezie blamed lack of peace which had bedevilled the society on improper upbringing of children at the family level and increasing rate of unemployment.
Represented by an Official of the Scheme, Mrs. Omoboade Adesina, Mrs. Chikezie however called on parents to train their children properly, while urging government to provide jobs for the youths, saying if they were gainfully engaged, crime would reduce in the society.
In his welcome address, the Director General, Institute For Peace and Conflict Resolution, Dr. Bakut Tswah-Bakut said the Institute was established in year 2000 for the promotion of peace in Nigeria.
Represented by the Coordinator of the Institute’s Southwest two Zonal Office Ikere, Barrister Sam Ajiye, the Director General noted that the peace day was set aside to strengthen peace globally.
Dr. Tswah-Bakut encouraged Nigerians to always be compassionate, kind, tolerance and be hopeful for sustained recovery from impacts of Covid-19 and other violent conflicts.
There were goodwill messages from DSS, NSCDC, Nigerian Immigration Service, NDLEA, NOA and religious leaders among others.
At the programme, secondary school Students who were present were inaugurated as members of peace club in their respective schools.
