Media professionals in Ekiti State have been enjoined to use their various platforms to create vigorous campaign against Female Genital Mutilation.
This is the submission of resource persons at a capacity workshop for Journalists in the State.
The speakers including an health official, Mrs. Olukemi Akinleye and the Chairperson of the National Association of Women Journalists NAWOJ Mrs. Fatima Bello described media as a critical tool needed to create better awareness on the danger of the harmful cultural practice.
Mrs. Akinleye and Mrs. Bello who spoke through Mr. Caleb Obisesan of Radio Nigeria affirmed that FGM had no benefit to woman neither does it check promiscuity, hence it must be stopped.
They highlighted the dangers of FGM to include, excessive bleeding, pain, psychological trauma, still birth, infection and even death.
Also, a legal expert, Mrs. Rita Ilevbare who spoke through Mrs. Blessing Ajileye noted that FGM had become a crime in the state as culprits were liable to one year imprisonment.
