President Muhammadu Buhari has directed the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development to co-ordinate and lead the deployment of a National plan to address the problem of out-of-school children in the country.
Inaugurating an 18-member Presidential Steering Committee on Alternate School Programme, ASP, the President said children abandoning formal school to engage in menial jobs and child was unacceptable.
President Buhari said the national would ensure a holistic and comprehensive inclusiveness of appropriate basic education for vulnerable children.
The President reiterated the commitment of the Federal Government to deal with key challenges of absolute poverty and propel Nigeria and Nigerians to a better way of life and development.
The committee is to place emphasis on refining and focusing on the vision of the initiative, ensure engagement and effective uptake of the initiative across the country
It is also to review and approve all work, implementation plan, expected deliverables, feedbacks and reports as proposed, and undertake any other task that can enhance the effective delivery of the initiative.
The President implored members of the committee to take the assignment with the utmost seriousness, saying that the future of the target youngsters is at stake.
The committee is co-chaired by the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, and that of the Ministry Education.
