The Nigeria Customs Service has intercepted 940 rounds of live ammunition from getting into wrong hands and halted the smuggling and circulation of 219 sacks, with another batch of 1,725 parcels of cannabis sativa, during its operations in Ogun State within the second quarter of the year.
The Customs Area Controller, Ogun one Area Command, Mr James Ojo made this known to Journalists in Abeokuta, while giving account of the Command’s achievements in the second quarter of the year.
Mr Ojo who maintained that suspected smugglers had devised lot of unapproved routes that were difficult to be manned by Customs operatives said the Command would take advantage of the advancement in Information Communication Technology, ICT, in the fight against the menace effectively.
The Customs Area Controller disclosed that over 92 million naira revenue was generated by the Commander in the second quarter, representing about 52.4 percent increase, compared to about 52 million naira that was recorded during the same period, last year.
He pointed out that more than 44,000 liters of Premium Motor Spirit, PMS, over 2,000 pieces of pneumatic foreign-used tyres, 64 bales and 222 sacks of used clothes as well as others items with the Duty Paid Value above 770 million naira were also recorded as seizures.
Mr Ojo attributed the success achieved during the period to the relentless efforts of the officers of the Command, restating their determination to protect the local economy and uphold the integrity of the nation’s borders, while also working to enhance public health and safety.
He solicited the continued support of stakeholders, especially the media, to strengthen the fight against smuggling and affirmed, that the invaluable contributions of traditional rulers had helped in fostering peace and unity across the nation’s borders.
