Ekiti Queens Football Club has won its first match since gaining promotion to the premier cadre of the Nigeria Women Football League.
Playing at the Oluyemi Kayode Stadium Ado Ekiti on Wednesday, 13th December, 2023, the Ekiti girls beat neighbours, Sunshine Queens of Akure by a lone goal.
The goal, which came through a free kick in the 62nd minute of the match, was the first goal Ekiti Queens would score at home since the season began 5 weeks ago, and was enough to get the 3 points at stake.
Fans of Ekiti Queens and indeed football lovers in the state were apprehensive before the match, as the Ekiti girls had not won any fixture in the competition, including two previous home matches which ended goalless.
The first match on the opening day, the 15th of November, 2023 ended goalless against defending champion, Delta Queens of Asaba, as well as another home fixture against FC Robo on the 29th November, 2023.
With the 1-nil victory over Sunshine Queens, the Ekiti Queens now have 5 points from five games and will be travelling to Port Harcourt next Wednesday to face former champion, River Angels Football Club.
