Rivers Govt Demolishes Assembly Complex…….Members Hold Sitting in Govt House

There is a new twist to the on-going political crisis in Rivers State as the House of Assembly Complex has been demolished by the state government.

According to government sources, the demolition was necessitated by the need to rebuild the complex following a fire incident on October 29, 2023.

Over ten Earth moving equipment, including bulldozers and excavators were sighted at the complex, carrying out the exercise.

It could not be immediately determined how the decision to demolish the whole complex was taken and who took the decision, as the general opinion was that the affected section of the building could have been reconstructed.

27 out of 32 members of the House defected from the People’s Democratic Party to the All Progressives Congress on Monday, the 11th December, 2023 while 24 hours later, a High Court sitting in Port Harcourt declared Edison Ehie, who is in Governor Fubara’s camp, as the authentic Speaker of the Assembly.

In the meantime, the House of Assembly, under Speaker Edison Ehie has moved its sitting to a building within the government house premises.

The Assembly, during plenary on Wednesday, 13th December, 2023, elected a new Majority Leader, Adolphus Orubienimigha.

Latest report says the state Governor, Siminalayi Fubara has presented the state 2024 budget proposal to the House of Assembly.

Only the five members of the House loyal to him were present at the sitting.
