By Amos Ogunrinde

Employers of Corps members in Ekiti State have been implored to accord priority to their welfare by providing befitting accommodation, transport allowance and other packages for them in order to boost their morale while serving their fatherland.

The Director General, NationaI Youth Service Corps, Brigadier General, Yusha’u Ahmed gave the advice in Ado Ekiti while declaring open the 2023 Corps Employers Workshop with the theme “Optimizing the Productivity of Corps Members Through Enhanced Welfare and Security During the Service Year”.

Brigadier General Ahmed who was represented by one of the Directors, Mr. Tunde Oyebade noted that there was rapid decline in the welfare of Corps Members due to the failure of their employers to do the needful in the areas of welfare and security.

The NYSC Boss noted that it was the duty of Corps Employers to provide security for the youths serving in their establishments rather than exposing them to dangers.

Brigadier General Ahmed also observed under ultilisation of the Youth Corps by Local Governments, ministeries and over ultilisation by private schools.

“Some of the corps members are becoming lazy because they were being underutilized thereby preventing them from contributing their quota to nationaI development” the NYSC DG said.

He alleged that some Corps Employers do connived with the youths to abscond from their places of primary assignments by sharing their monthly allowance, saying that this negates the objectives of the scheme.

The NYSC Boss however appealed to Corps Members to Shun unnecessary journey and concentrate on their service to the nation.

“It is just one year service, there is no need to embark on unnecessary journey, serve the Nation with your passion” Brigadier General Ahmed told the Corps Members.

In his message, Governor Biodun Oyebanji said the deployment of Corps Members to schools had gone a long way at improving the education Sector in Ekiti, urging their employers to make good use of them.

Governor Oyebanji who spoke through the Commissioner for Youth Development, Mr Adesola Gold appealed to Corps Employers to provide incentives and good working environment for the youths in order to bring the best out of them.

“I want to appeal to you employers of Corps Members to please treat them like your normal employees, so that they will feel at home” the Governor said.
