The National Youths Service Corps, NYSC has restated its commitment to promote unity and inter-tribal relationship among Nigerians.
The NYSC Coordinator in Ekiti state, Mrs Mary Chikezie stated this during a unity roadwalk in some strategic streets in Ado-Ekiti as part of activities to commemorate the fiftieth (50th) anniversary of the establishment of the Corps.
Mrs Chikezie said part of the reasons for creating the corps was to encourage national unity and cohesion, instill discipline in the youths as well as to ensure hardwork, which she said would be sustained.
The NYSC Coordinator gave assurance that the scheme would do more in training Corps members to acquire skills to become self reliant, improve on the rural health initiative, collaboration with other agencies for the growth of the nation.
“We want Nigerians to appreciate us, they should appreciate the developmental strategies we have taken in this country”.
She noted that the scheme had recorded numerous achievements for the past fifty years of its establishment, especially in the areas of national integration, training and moulding of youths, economic development and inter-ethnic marriages, among others.
Mrs. Chikezie however appreciated the founder of NYSC and other collaborators for their efforts to sustain the scheme.
Addressing passersby during the walk, some of the Corps members who spoke in different languages, including Richard Ogenede and Madefor Jenifer expressed happiness for the opportunity to be part of the youths serving their fatherland.
The NYSC was established by a Military head of state, General Yakubu Gowon on May 22, 1973.
