5 Months After Doctor’s Death; Hospital Elevator Abandoned.

The crashed elevator, which led to the death of a medical Doctor at the General Hospital, Odan, Lagos, five months ago, has not been replaced.

According to reports, the exit area to the lift has been barricaded since then while a large banner was placed there but no sign of any construction work could be seen.

Interestingly, Doctors and visitors to the building have been using the steps to access their destination for the past five months since the incident took place.

The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Health, Lagos State, Olusegun Ogboye told newsmen that contract for the replacement of the lift and renovation of the 10-storey 131 year-old building has been awarded, but visitors could not see any sign of work at the building.

After the elevator crashed, killing the medical Doctor, Vwaere Diaso, information emerged that the management of the hospital was aware of the faulty elevator, but ignored it, while the old equipment was in the habit of stopping midway many times before the fatal descent that day.

The Lagos State government also set up a panel to probe the tragedy and it came up with many revelations, leading to blacklisting of the facility manager and suspension of General Manager, Lagos State Infrastructure and Asset Management Agency.

Also, Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu visited the hospital and gave an assurance that the needs of the hospital and the Doctors would be attended to, but apparently, whatever effort being made, if any, has not been noticed by those who should know and those who should see it.
