To this end, the Ekiti South Development Agenda which has been championing the collective course met with some traditional rulers under the umbrella of Majority Obas of Ekiti in Odo Owa, Ijero Local Government where the coordinator of the group Mr. Idowu Afuye sought the support of the monarchs towards the realization of the agenda.
According to Mr. Afuye, since the creation of Ekiti state, both the Central and North senatorial districts have produced governors on three different occasions hence Ekiti South which has never produced anyone should be rallied round by all to attain such feat during the next election in the interest of fairness, justice and equity.
Mr. Afuye explained that Ekiti South Senatorial District was blessed with qualified, experience and competent politicians urging the traditional rulers, religious bodies and all stakeholders to intervene in the political system of the state and use their influence to prevail on all political parties to give Ekiti South a chance to produce the next governor.
He said “One of the basic attributes or pillars of Democracy as system of government is open and fair competition within firmly and generally accepted rules of the game among individuals and groups especially political parties for all effective positions of government at all levels of power at regular intervals.
“Political equality in which every citizen in a democratic government is accorded equal opportunity to vote and be voted for, provided they are duly qualified to participate in the political system, is enshrined in Article 2 of the United Nations Charter as well as in section 14 subsection 4 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria of 1999.
Section 14 subsection 4 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 states that “The composition of the Government of State, a local government council or any agencies of such Government or council and the conduct of the affairs of the Government or council or such agencies shall be carried out in such a manner as to recognize the diversity of the people within its area of authority and the needs to promote a sense of belonging and loyalty among all the people of the federation.
He added that democracy that was not rooted in equity and distributive justice would lead to sectional chaos and political festiveness.
Reacting, the traditional rulers advised people of the south senatorial district to be united in the course of the agitation.
